Balanced
historical account of Chinese in Penang
HISTORY
enriches us, helps us avoid mistakes of the past and allows us
to map our future.
Thus,
it is important for a community to know its past and to share
that knowledge with others, said Penang Education and Economic
Planning Committee chairman Datuk Dr Toh Kin Woon before launching
author and historian Tan Kim Hongs book The Chinese in
Penang: A Pictorial History at the Teochew Association on
Chulia Street recently.
Tan
has written about the 'people's history' and that's what distinguishes
him from other authors who tend to focus on stories of the rich
and influential, added Dr Toh.
This
is not a compilation of profiles on prominent people but includes
the stories of common folk.

history:Dr Toh launching the book authored by Tan(left).
Throughout
the book, Tan tries to give a balanced perspective of ideas, social
status, religious ideals and political leanings that were prevalent
during that time period, Dr Toh said, adding that the book
was an important contribution to Malaysian history and should
be incorporated in history lessons taught in schools.
In
his speech, Tan said the book covers the communitys early
migration and population growth, social organisations, economic
activities, political orientations, education and religious events.
The
book is a revised edition of my previous work and contains some
700 pictures inside, he said, adding that the book encompasses
a history of Chinese immigrants spanning more than 200 years.
This
is not a simple compilation of facts. It reflects my opinions
and observations as well as my values and philosophy based on
my research.
In
an age of selective amnesia, it is important to learn
from history so that we can chart our future path, he said.
About
100 history enthusiasts turned up for the event.
Also
present was the books editor Khoo Salma Nasution.
